CELEBRITIES REMEMBER THE “PIONEERING” MARY TYLER MOORE

Chris Carlson/AP

Chris Carlson/AP

On Wednesday, Mary Tyler Moore passed away at 80 in Greenwich, Connecticut.  Moore’s family said her death was caused by cardiopulmonary arrest after she had caught pneumonia.

Moore was revered for her hugely popular television shows, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Dick Van Dyke Show in the 1960s and 70s.  Moore is recognized by many as the person who pioneered the “modern career woman” character on TV.  Moore’s longtime representative Mara Buxbaum described her as, “A groundbreaking actress, producer, and passionate advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.”

Dick Van Dyke wrote a touching tribute letter to the late Moore, in which he said, “She left an imprint on television comedy.”  Dyke wrote of The Mary Tyler Moore Show: “It was a milestone, that show. It kicked off an awful lot of enthusiasm in a lot of women. She got it moving!”

Celebrities including Dick Van Dyke, Miley Cyrus, Ben Stiller, Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Keaton, Cher and Oprah Winfrey have paid tribute to Moore on Twitter and Instagram.  The WANNA has gathered the best celebrity reactions below.

HOW SAG HARBOR HOPES TO REBUILD AFTER FIRE

Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce

Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce

Last week, there was a fire in Sag Harbor, Hamptons that burned along Main Street and destroyed the beloved Sag Harbor Cinema.  A cause for the fire has yet to be discovered and the investigation could go on for a while, officials said.

Now, there is a way the small business owners of Sag Harbor can make a contribution to help rebuild the whole Sag Harbor business district.  Sag Harbor elected officials want to designate Sag Harbor as a Federal Disaster Area so it can get the help it needs to rebuild.  Lisa Field, President of the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce, says this designation will help the Main Street businesses "who lost everything with securing loans and aid at reduced interest rates.”

Field asks that even if a small business was not directly affected by the fire, they should still call (631) 632-9837 and tell them the business suffered economic loss as a result.  This small act will help restore the beautiful Main Street of Sag Harbor!

MARTIN SHEEN, DEBRA MESSING AND MORE CELEBS WANT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE TO VOTE AGAINST TRUMP

Unite for America/YouTube

A group of celebrities have come together in a new PSA to urge the Republican members of the Electoral College to change the outcome of the 2016 Election and deny Donald Trump the Presidency.  The celebrities that take part in the video are Martin Sheen, Debra Messing, James Cromwell, BD Wong, Noah Wyle, Freda Payne, Bob Odenkirk, J. Smith Cameron, Michael Urie, Moby, Mike Farrell, Loretta Swit, Richard Schiff, Christine Lahti, Steven Pasquale, Dominic Fumusa, Emily Tyra, and Talia Balsam.  Martin Sheen kicks off the video saying, “Republican voters of the Electoral College, this message is for you.”  Debra Messing says that Trump “lacks the necessary stability” to be President of the United States.  The celebs go on to urge the Electoral College members to vote for anyone other than Trump: “I’m not asking you to vote for Hillary Clinton…Any eligible person, no matter which party they belong to.”

The celebs then address the EC directly: “You have the position, the authority, and the opportunity to go down in the books as an American hero who changed the course of history.”

Watch the whole PSA below.

Only 37 Electors are needed to change the course of history. Record your own video addressing the Electors directly-let them know why you support them, and share why you think their decision is so important to America. Share the video with the hashtags #UniteForAmerica and #SupportTheElectors.

This video seems to model the Joss Whedon directed PSAs during the campaign in which celebs such as Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson said don’t vote for Trump.  You can check out The WANNA’s previous post on all the 2016 political PSAs here.

The WANNA wants to hear from you!  Are you happy with the 2016 Election results?  Or do you agree with these celebrities about a revote against Trump?

HGTV’S “FLIP OR FLOP” COUPLE SEPARATE FOLLOWING POLICE AND GUNS INCIDENT

HGTV

HGTV

Tarek and Christina El Moussa, the husband and wife duo of HGTV channel’s Flip or Flop, have separated six months after police were called to the couple’s home on suspicion of a “possibly suicidal man” back in May.  When authorities arrived at the El Moussa house, a “crying and shaking” Christina told police that her husband Tarek had put a handgun in his backpack then ran from the house.  Upon discovery that Tarek was walking around a nearby state park with a loaded weapon, the local sheriff’s helicopter searched for him.  Tarek was located by authorities, and did not resist when they brought him back to his home.

Despite the report of a “suicidal” man, both Christina and Tarek insisted he was not a danger to himself.  An incident report stated: “Tarek did not make any threatening statements to [Christina] and he did not make any comments about hurting himself or anyone else.  She also denied that Tarek had ever been suicidal.”  Tarek claimed he left the house in a rush to “blow off some steam” and brought the gun as protection from “mountain lions and rattlesnakes.”  No charges were filed, but authorities confiscated five guns, including an AR-15 rifle, from the El Moussa home for 30 days.

This intense incident proved to be too much for the Flip or Flop couple.  Even after they attended marriage counseling following the incident, Christina and Tarek sadly could not make things work.  The pair, who were married in 2009 and have two children, have officially separated to “evaluate the future” of their marriage.  They told E! News: “Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage.  We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution.  There was no violence and no charges were filed.”

HGTV said the El Moussa marriage troubles do not mean the end of Flip or Flop.  The show plans to continue production, with Christina and Tarek working together professionally.

Country music’s husband-wife duo Tim McGraw and Faith Hill just made the holidays extra bright for some unsuspecting Walmart shoppers.  Earlier this week, the couple paid off $5,000 worth of pending layaway purchases for the customers of Walmart in Baker County, Florida.  McGraw’s mother, Betty Trimble, showed up in person to the Walmart to act as the Secret Santa distributing the “gifts.”  Each gift came with the fully paid receipt of the layaway item, and a card signed, “Merry Christmas from Tim McGraw & Faith Hill.”

Several of the lucky shoppers who went home with a Christmas present shared their stories to social media, thanking Trimble, Hill and McGraw.  Jessica Lumpkin, a Baker County resident, wrote on Facebook, “I didn’t have anything on layaway, was just picking up a package and she gave me this. I’ve never had this happen to me. I’m glad I call Baker County my home.”

WHICH HOLLYWOOD ACTORS ARE THE MOST OVERPAID ACCORDING TO FORBES?

Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images

Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images

On Wednesday Forbes released their annual “Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actors” list, and Johnny Depp is in the lead for the second year in a row.  Each year, Forbes calculates which Hollywood actors are the most overpaid, usually consisting of Hollywood male leads such as Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise.  The 2016 ranking is no different, although it does include Julia Roberts as the only woman listed.

Forbes’ method for the ranking goes as follows: “We looked at the last three films each actor starred in before June 2016, save animated films, movies where the actor appeared in an insignificant role, or movies that were released on fewer than 2,000 screens.  We did not examine folks unless they had starred in a new eligible movie since last year's scoring period.  We then deducted the estimated production budget from the global box office for each film according to Box Office Mojo to come up with a limited definition of each movie’s operating income.  We took the total operating income from the star's three most recent significant films then divided by the star's estimated pay for those films to come up with a final return on investment number.”

Basically, Forbes figures out which Hollywood stars are getting paid more than their films are raking in at the box office.  Of course, the list is not intended to suggest these actors are not deserving of their success.

COULD "SOCK COPS" SPARK A CITY WIDE MOVEMENT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

sockitforward.com

sockitforward.com

In a city where the kind and caring gestures of people let alone the NYPD are rarely captured on camera, one New Yorker stumbled upon a touching scene in the New York City subway and shared the moment on Facebook.  On Friday, Joshua Lagan told the touching story of two police officers doing a good Christmas deed for a homeless man.  Lagan was waiting for his train at Grand Central station when he noticed a commotion.  Two police officers ran over to a homeless man when he started rummaging through the trashcan.  One of the officers took the homeless man (and Lagan) by surprise when he asked, “What are you collecting cans for?”  The homeless man took a moment to respond, “Socks.  I want socks.”  What happened next will bring a tear to your eye!

Lagan wrote, “Without hesitation, the Cop put his arm on his shoulder and smiling said ‘I’ll buy you socks. It’s Christmas soon right? I’ll buy you socks for Christmas. Merry Christmas’ he said smiling broadly. ‘Let’s go to the store.’ The homeless man was so shocked he just kept stammering, ‘are you serious?’ ‘Are you serious?’”

Lagan snapped a photo of the exchange:

Joshua Lagan/Facebook

Joshua Lagan/Facebook

Lagan continued, “I don’t share this to make a statement about homeless people, or cops, or politics. I share this because of love. I saw someone treat someone with love today, and it reminded me of the love that we need to show for us to overcome all of the hate we're seeing in the news these days.  It was a small gesture, but I saw a man regardless of color or uniform show compassion for another person. How often do we miss opportunities to do that?”

You can read Lagan’s whole moving story here.

There is nothing like a selfless act of kindness to inspire others and get you in the holiday spirit!  Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

This season in addition to the red wine and fruitcake how about donating on behalf of a loved one, to these charities that provide SOCKS for the homeless?

“HEARTBROKEN” DOLLY PARTON CREATES FUND TO AID TENNESSEE FAMILIES HURT BY WILDFIRE

Tennessee Highway Patrol/Reuters

Tennessee Highway Patrol/Reuters

Country singer Dolly Parton has set up a fund to aid the now homeless families who lost everything in the recent Tennessee wildfire.  The fire, which originated from the Great Smoky Mountains, destroyed much of the town Gatlinburg, leaving 13 dead.  Parton’s hometown is Sevier County, Tennessee, right in the same area as the affected Gatlinburg.  Parton’s “Dollywood” theme park is also in the region where the fires raged, but was not affected.

This tragedy hit very close to home for Parton, who said she was “heartbroken.”  Parton described the wildfires as destroying “the same mountains where I grew up and where my people call home.”

Parton’s fund, called “My People Fund,” vows to donate $1,000 a month to each of the families affected by the wildfire.  In her My People Fund video statement Parton said, “We want to provide a hand up to all those families that have lost everything in the fires.  And to recover, we want to make sure that the Dollywood Foundation provides $1,000 a month to all of those families that have lost their homes in the fires until they get back up on their feet.  I know it has been a trying time for my people, and this assistance will help.”

There are currently over 200 people affected by the fire in Red Cross shelters in Sevier County, but it is not apparent how many families will be qualified for Parton’s monthly fund donations.  Parton gave credit to the Red Cross for helping with the suffering families, but urged individual people to donate to My People Fund to aid the Tennessee families as well.

If you wish to offer help to the uprooted families, check out Dolly’s My People Fund to donate.

HILLARY CLINTON MAKES SURPRISE APPEARANCE AT UNICEF’S SNOWFLAKE BALL TO AWARD “QUEEN” KATY PERRY

Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance at the 12th annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball to present Katy Perry with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award.

Perry and Clinton have a serious mutual appreciation of each other, and it was on full display at the Snowflake Ball.  Clinton took the stage unannounced to dedicate a speech to Katy as recipient of the Humanitarian Award.  Clinton said, “On a personal level, I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be here to help celebrate a global megastar, a social media queen with the most Twitter followers in the world – although she's getting some competition – and someone whose powerful voice and creative lyrics remind us when you get knocked down to get back up.”  Clinton continued, “I have seen Katy's commitment to the causes she believes in firsthand.  I've gotten to spend time with her and I know how deeply she cares about making our world a better place.  She is serious about understanding the complex problems we face and pulling people together to solve them.  We need champions like Katy now more than ever: her passion, her energy and, yes, her voice, louder than a lion.”

Perry, who actively supported Hillary throughout her Presidential campaign, was visibly emotional when she went onstage to accept the award.  Perry, tearing up at Clinton’s speech, joked, “Does anyone have a tissue?”  Perry returned Clinton’s kind words in her acceptance speech: “I've always had a voice, a singing voice, but I've never had a voice like I've had before.  Hillary has lit that voice inside of me, and that light will never go out, it will continue to get brighter and brighter and brighter.  Thank you Hillary.  You motivate me and so many millions of people.  We appreciate you for your incredible work and your heart.”

The WANNA is all for two powerful ladies supporting each other!

AMBER HEARD SAYS, “YOU ARE NOT ALONE” IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PSA

Amber Heard recently partnered with #GirlGaze Project to release a domestic violence PSA.  The PSA comes after Heard’s very public divorce from Johnny Depp earlier this year.  In May 2016, Heard brought domestic abuse allegations against Depp, but eventually dropped the suit in August when Depp settled for $7 million.

In the PSA, Heard gets emotional while revealing personal details about her own experience with domestic violence.  She shares the thoughts that went through her own head during the abuse, such as “How is this happening to me?”  Heard addresses the fact that abuse can happen “in your home behind closed doors.”  Heard fights back tears at one point when she says,  “telling someone safe is the beginning of choosing yourself.” Heard speaks directly to abuse survivors, saying, “You are not alone.”

In the video, Heard recognizes the “unique opportunity” she has to bring awareness to the issue from being in the public eye.  Heard encourages the media and people in general to change the way we talk about domestic violence.  She implores viewers to, “Speak up.  Raise your voice.”

Watch the full PSA below to hear the rest of Heard’s moving words.

Today we honor International Day for the Elimination of Violence Towards Women with this powerful message from Amber Heard.

BALDWIN FACES OFF WITH TRUMP VIA TWITTER

Saturday Night Live/NBC

On this past week’s Saturday Night Live, Alec Baldwin reprised his role as President-elect Donald Trump for a new skit, “Donald Trump Prepares Cold Open.”  Trump was less than pleased yet again with Baldwin’s comical impression of him, and expressed his distaste on Twitter.

Baldwin did not take Trump’s Twitter criticism of the SNL skit lying down.  Instead, Baldwin took the opportunity to give Trump some political advice in a series of direct tweets, as seen below:

The SNL skit that has Trump so upset takes a comedic look at how Trump might handle various aspects of his Presidency, such as his plans for immigration and Obamacare.  For each campaign issue brought up by “Mike Pence,” played by Beck Bennett, Baldwin says the opposite of what Trump had promised during his campaign.  For example, when “Pence” brings up their plan to scrap Obamacare, Baldwin says, “Keep it.  Let’s just keep it.”  The skit jokingly suggests that Trump will not follow through with many of his campaign promises once he takes office.

You can watch the hilarious skit in full below.
