Trump Says He Won’t Drop Out of Race, But He Might Not Win It

Gina Giordan

Donald Trump has come out and stated he will remain in the race for the Republican nomination until the very end.  While these comments might have seemed unnecessary even a few weeks ago, support for Trump is quickly waning.  Just this week, Trump has lost his lead in an Iowa poll, and perhaps more worryingly to him, in a national poll.  In both, neurosurgeon Ben Carson leads Trump.

Adding to Trump’s headaches are the bad word of mouth surrounding his campaign.  After disastrous debate performances, voters may be even more dissuaded in voting for Trump when they see the general response to Trump seems to be more serious.  When his campaign was considered a bit of a joke, the media responded accordingly.  Now, there are protests in Congress about his appearance on SNL and it’s almost every day that we hear some Hollywood celeb show their disdain against the Donald.

Most recently, Olivia Wilde, whose indie hit Meadowland hit theatres earlier this month, spoke against Trump’s campaign at an event promoting the short film Ellis.  Wilde declared

"It made me think of the current refugee crisis," in an interview with Page Six. "[America] was a beacon of hope for so many ... yet some in this country have developed this xenophobia that totally conflicts with what we’re based on."

"The fact that we can have someone running for president who openly projects that xenophobia is really sickening," she added, "particularly when you look at a film like this and remember our roots."

Support for Trump seems to be waning, and he doesn’t have the bravado and confidence he displayed a few months back.  He’s even started talking about “the possibility” of not winning the nomination.  The presidential game is getting harder to play, and Trump may soon find himself on the side of his often quoted “losers.”

New York Police Union Calls for Boycott of Quentin Tarantino Films

A New York Police Union has called for a boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s movies after the acclaimed director participated in a protest against police brutality this weekend.  The protest came just days after the murder of police officer Randolph Holder in a bike theft investigation.

The rally, organized by RiseUpOctober, was supposed to protest the violent deaths caused by police brutality across the US.  Namely, and specific to the NYPD, the recent deaths of Eric Garner and dozens of others unarmed black men.  However, the timing of the protest became unfortunate due to the regrettable death of officer Holder.

Tarantino rallied a speech where he called the deaths of people at the hands of the police murder:

“I’m a human being with a conscience,” said Tarantino. “And if you believe there’s murder going on, then you need to rise up and stand up against it. I’m here to say I’m on the side of the murdered. When I see murders, I do not stand by … I have to call a murder a murder and I have to call the murderers the murderers.”

Comments like these lead to harsh comments from the NYPD who consider Tarantino is the last person to speak out against violence due to the extreme violence depicted in his movies. In a statement Sunday, Police Benevolent Association president Patrick J. Lynch said, “It’s no surprise that someone who makes a living glorifying crime and violence is a cop-hater, too.”

“The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies — they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem,” the statement continued. “New Yorkers need to send a message to this purveyor of degeneracy that he has no business coming to our city to peddle his slanderous ‘Cop Fiction.’ It’s time for a boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s films.”

Tarantino admitted that the timing of the protest was unfortunate, but that it was unmovable since they had flown in guests other than Tarantino into the city.  He also lamented the death of the police officer by saying: “It’s like this: it’s unfortunate timing, but we’ve flown in all these families to go and tell their stories … That cop that was killed; that’s a tragedy, too.”  Which does bear the question, had the protest come a few days after the death of Eric Garner, would a boycott of Tarantino films be called for?

Eleven people were arrested at the RiseUpOctober rally for charges ranging from disorderly conduct, obstructing vehicular traffic and resisting arrest, according to the New York Post

Tarantino’s next film, Hateful Eight, is set to premiere this Christmas.

Nike Gifted Michael J. Fox Self-Tying Shoes!

Yesterday was “Back to the Future” day, also known as October 21st, 2015.  The day Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, traveled into the future on the hit movie “Back to the Future 2!”   The day was filled with celebrations all over, including a surprise appearance of Marty and Doc Brown on Jimmy Kimmel Live!  However, one of the most surprising events of the day was when Nike gifted Michael J. Fox a real pair of self-tying shoes like in the movie.

Nike designer and Vice President for Design and Special Projects Tinker Hatfield Jr. sent Michael J. Fox a note thanking him for his inspiration and saying these are the first pair of actually self-tying shoes ever called Nike Air Mags, just like in the classic film!  Hatfield and Michael J. Fox also assured us this gift is not a one off, and added the Nike Air Mags would come on sale on 2016!

STAR WARS BROKE THE INTERNET!

Gina Giordan

Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm

The new Star Wars movie is quickly becoming the most important cinematic event of 2015.  Not only did Disney release a trailer last night that managed to get nerds to watch a football game (or football fans to be interested in Star Wars), it also released pre-sale tickets for the movie’s release on December 18th.  And then the internet crashed every movie ticket site in the country.

So what’s so special about Star Wars?  It seems like every single 80’s and 70’s movie franchise is revived or rebooted these days. We live in the era of nostalgia where everything five years or older needs to be brought back.  Just yesterday Netflix announced it’s reviving Gilmore Girls!

Star Wars is basically the “hero’s journey” retold in space.  A young boy has a destiny to fulfill, so he follows a wise old man, and thanks to his help defeats the forces of evil.  Luke, Obi Wan, and Darth Vader, right?  The thing is the hero’s journey is incredibly appealing when it’s done well.  It’s been done thousands of times in history (from Beowulf to The Lord of the Rings), but what makes it work is that there is a world that’s at stake.  The hero’s journey is about a youth who can save the world.  So we need to care about this world!

Star Wars blows away any child who has never seen a movie in space.  In fact, it blows away children used to Avengers-styled CGI.  The world and its characters are written and directed in a way that makes you think that this world wasn’t created for the audience, but rather that we’re getting a glimpse into that world.  So while the story might be familiar, the world feels so new and vast, that we are immediately drawn to it.  There’s something magical about the amazement of seeing the Millennium Falcon for the first time, and then hear Luke Skywalker say: “What a piece of junk!”

20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox

What makes the new Star Wars sequels so appealing is the way it seems to blend the old with the new.  The story isn’t too original.  In fact, from what we get from the trailers, I feel I’ve seen it before.  It’s about a youth living in a desert planet who finds an unexpected friend from outer space and immediately their adventures begin.

Along the way, they meet an old man who tells them about the Force.

And then they use it to fight a masked evil warrior.

This is a story we’ve heard before.  Like Luke’s.  In a world that seems old and new at the same time.  It’s all lining up like in that movie in 1977.  The similarities between the original Star Wars and this one?  Let’s call them echoes of the Force.

JOHN OLIVER AND MIKE MYERS TAKE THE CANADIAN ELECTION SERIOUSLY

Gina Giordan

Although the US is acting like the presidential election is next week (and will continue to do so for the next year), there are other important countries that are currently going more immediate elections.  Namely, Canada is about to make a decision to end conservative Stephen Harper’s role as Prime Minister.  The implications of Harper staying or not in office, which include everything from Canada’s amazing healthcare system to Syrian refugees, caught the attention of John Oliver, who managed to lambast Harper as only he can do. With cold hard facts, and a steady dose of self-deprecation.

However, to prove he really wanted Canada’s attention in his campaign to end Stephen Harper’s reign, Oliver rallied the “most Canadian” forces he could imagine: a beaver playing “Sweet Caroline” a moose getting a colonoscopy, and ITM’s and MYWW’s friend: MIKE MYERS!

Yes, Mr. Canada himself appeared on John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” dressed as a mounty and driving a snow plow to urge Canadians to vote against Harper’s reelection.  Myers recently appeared in an episode of “Movies You Wanna Watch” celebrating the film “Being Canadian,”  where comedy writer Rob Cohen goes on a cross-Canada trip and interviews Canadian celebrities to discover what it really means to be Canadian.

LAMAR ODOM WAKES UP FROM COMA!

Gina Giordan

According to E!, Lamar Odom has woken up from the coma he slipped into after he was hospitalized on Tuesday after a drug overdose.  Perhaps more importantly, it seems Lamar is able to communicate!

According to E!’s source,  Odom woke up on Friday and saw his ex-wife, Kourtney Kardashian. He allegedly greeted her “Hey, baby” before falling back asleep.

The doctors treating Odom had said that the longer he spent unconscious, the more likely he was to recover normal brain function once he woke up.

We’ll keep you posted in any more developments!

AMY SCHUMER GOES AFTER THE KARDASHIANS IN AMAZING SNL OPENING MONOLOGUE

Gina Giordan

NBC

NBC

Comedy superstar Amy Schumer hosted this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live like a champ.  Not only was the show a hit (with most sketches being downright hilarious), Schumer also treated audiences to a short stand up set as her opening monologue.  The set ranged from everything from Bradley Cooper and Hillary Clinton to her new 18-month-old niece.  However, Schumer took a particular pleasure in hitting out at the Kardashians.

In her bit, Schumer mentioned she was worried about the role models we have for women.  And how she had to be a role model for little girls particularly when talking about body image.

“We have to be a role model for these little girls. Because who do they have? All they have, literally, is the Kardashians,” said Schumer.  “And is that a great message for little girls? A whole family of women who take the faces they were born with as a light suggestion?”

She went on to say: “We used to have Khloé,” and make fun of Khloé Kardashian’s recent surgeries. She also referred to Khloé’s weight loss by saying: “She lost a Kendall.”

While Schumer may not be a paragon, she certainly is a self-made woman who has worked hard to get to her place in comedy.  She is also someone who’s never been too worried about self-image, making fun of herself and the men who don’t considerable “hot enough” in her sketches and standup.

Check out Schumer’s entire monologue here.

OWNER OF BROTHEL WHERE LAMAR ODOM COLLAPSED IS A PUBLICITY HOUND

After the media barrage covering the collapse and hospitalization of Lamar Odom, there are voices that feel they have something to say about Odom’s tragedy.  Or that there’s some money to be made out of this.  That’s perhaps the reasoning behind Dennis Hof’s interview with Nancy Grace.  Hof, the owner of The Love Ranch, the brothel where Odom collapsed, went on television and started revealing all kinds of information that Odom and his family might have wanted to remain private.

While it’s important to know the truth about what happened to Odom, Hof’s comments to Nancy Grace and Entertainment tonight add nothing to knowing about the pro athlete’s condition.  In fact, he seems eager to disclose how much Odom spent in his business and what services he got for that fee.  That information is unnecessary, and just goes to show the horrible obsession the media has with reality show celebrities.

During his interview with Nancy Grace, Hof comments on how a Kardashian family representative reached out to him to ask him to please not speak to the media while Odom is in hospital.  He then proudly blurts out that he told him to “go to hell.”  Hof is trying to sell the angle of the Kardashians trying to hide the truth and control the narrative of what is out there regarding Odom’s condition. However, this argument means nothing unless Hof actually has something to say about Odom that will help him or the public.   He even spouted more bile about the Kourtney Kardashian by saying: “If she really cared about this man, he wouldn’t be at my place with my girls.”  After seeing Hof’s “tell-all” comments, it’s clear that his only real interest in the matter is publicity.

CLINTON AND SANDERS CONSOLIDATE THEMSELVES AS TOP DEMS AFTER DEBATE

Gina Giordan

Last night’s democratic debate proved what everyone already knew was true.  The only true candidates in the Dem race are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.  And out of the two, there was only one clear winner.  Hillary’s guile and poise in answering Anderson Cooper’s questions reminded democrats why she was the clear frontrunner for the nomination (and some would say the presidency) just a few months ago.

Hillary was strong and composed.  Her answers were for the most part clear and to the point.  More importantly, she was there to draw first blood against Bernie Sanders.  She addressed Sanders’ on-the-fence stance against gun control in the past early on in the debate, and Sanders never really recovered from that blow.  In fact, Bernie actually helped Hillary when he said “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about” Hillary’s “damn emails.”  It’s telling when your biggest opponent avoids the weakest point of your campaign.

Giphy

Giphy

In Sanders defense, he was still a strong candidate, despite playing slight catch-up to Hillary.  In fact, the Sanders campaign feels they won the debate, as does Sanders’ internet-driven young fanbase.  However, Hillary’s camp seems to be certain of their own victory.

Unlike the GOP’s two circus roadshow-like debates, filled with insults and ad hominem attacks, the democrats actually tried to answer questions about their policies and the ways they wanted to change the country.  Maybe this is why calling the winner in this debate was a bit harder than in the GOP ones.  In fact, GOP favorite Donald Trump live-tweeted the event and actually criticized the fact that the candidates seemed to know what they were talking about.  What did the Donald want?  For candidates to wing it?  You can almost hear Trump yelling at his TV: “What a bunch of losers.”

LAMAR ODOM: REALITY ROYALTY AT A PRICE

Gina Giordan

Getty

The tragedy of Lamar Odom’s hospitalization after collapsing in a brothel on Tuesday night once again brings up the question of how much damage reality show fame can bring to the real people behind the shows. As Khloe Kardashian’s husband, Lamar Odom became a regular on Keeping Up With the Kardashians up until their heavily covered and publicized divorce in 2013.

For most viewers of reality television, it is hard to remember that the people they see are playing characters that serve narratives within those shows.  Lamar was to be Khloe’s husband, until the ratings made it necessary for a big “event” to happen in the family.  In an excellent piece for BuzzFeed News, Elle Woodward and Rebecca Hendin showed how Keeping Up With the Kardashians manipulates its viewers into thinking their lives might be just like the eponymous family if they manage to “make it big.” After all, look at Kim and Khloe’s problems – marriage, divorce, motherhood – aren’t they all so relatable?  What has kept Keeping Up With the Kardashians alive is the fact that they use the same narratives that resonate with the majority of the people.  It’s the same technique soap operas and telenovelas have been using for almost their entire existence as television shows.

How can we be so quick to judge reality television if they are just using a method that’s been used thousands of times before?  Because behind the characters of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, 19 Kids and Counting, and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo are real people whose lives are promoted and exposed for entertainment.  Of course, for a while they get to reap the benefits of fame, but the cost of their overly exposed life tends to catch up with them.  We’ve heard these stories before: Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, and more recently Josh Duggar.  We can’t celebrate reality celebrities as we would celebrate fictional characters because while reality stars’ lives may be dramatized, they have real lives behind the cameras.

In Lamar Odom’s case, while he made his name as a pro athlete and a basketball champion, his level of fame and recognition came thanks to Keeping Up With the Kardashians.  It is horrifying to look at the coverage his tragedy is receiving and seeing most of the stories relate to how the “Kardashian klan” has reacted to the tragedy.  Instead of focusing on Lamar’s career or his medical condition, we keep hearing about how Kourtney, Kylie, Kris, and Kim feel about this very sick man’s state.

Lamar Odom is a man fighting with addiction.  Let’s start talking about his condition, what lead him to being in hospital, and not about some silly family’s opinion on him.

Selena Gomez Confirms She Has Lupus And Underwent Chemo!

Pop idol Selena Gomez confirmed that she was diagnosed with lupus over two years ago, and that she received chemotherapy to treat it.

In 2013, Gomez underwent treatment for the autoimmune disease at Dawn of the Meadows rehab facility.  Tabloids were quick to say she had gone to rehab after her breakup with Justin Bieber.  Gomez’s representatives shot down those rumors immediately, but now Selena herself has confirmed the real reason behind her break:

“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” she told Billboard Magazine.

Gomez was assertive towards the tabloids that filled pages about her supposed mental state and addiction:

"I wanted so badly to say: 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes'."

She also used the interview to remind the media of her work as a Unicef ambassador:

"I've been working since I was seven. I've been a Unicef ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story.”

ITM covered Selena’s efforts for Unicef in this exclusive interview!
